PREVENTING HEAT ILLNESS IN THE WORKPLACE

  Posted June 28, 2019

Keep your workforce safe and limit the risk of heat illness.

All workers are at risk for heat illness during the summer months, especially during a heat wave, no matter what your occupation may be.
In 2017, 2,630 workers suffered from heat illness and 18 died from a heat stroke. If you work in hot or humid conditions, it’s important to know how to handle heat safely and keep safe.

Stay hydrated
Make sure you’re drinking water every 15 minutes, even if you’re not thirsty- Why?-  When your body recognises it’s thirsty, it could mean you are dehydrated. Keep your body hydrated throughout the day and even out of work hours.

Find shade
When taking your break, make sure to rest under a shaded area to cool yourself down.

Lightweight Clothing
Wearing the right clothing can help keep you cool. Select clothes that are lightweight, loose fitting and light coloured. Also, wear a hat and sunglasses if possible. We understand PPE needs to be used at all time within the workplace, just make sure you take off equipment on breaks to give your body a ‘cool down’ period.

Recognise signs & symptoms
Educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as a heat stroke, heat stress, and heat exhaustion.

Plan Ahead
If you’re not used to working in hot and humid conditions, take enough time to let your body acclimate. Slowly increase the amount of time and work done in the heat so your body can adjust. Also carry around plenty of water to keep hydrated.

Please take every precaution to keep you and your co-workers safe in the heat. If you need immediate assistance with heat illness or exhaustion please seek medical attention.
