Safety Critical Worker Medicals

“Doing it right costs less than than doing it over”

Are you aware if you require a Safety Critical Medical? Whether you are a Construction Worker, Plant Operator, or someone who works at height, these are some examples of roles that have been defined as ‘Safety Critical’.

“The term ‘safety critical work’ is defined as:
“Where the ill health of an individual may compromise their ability to undertake a task defined as safety critical, thereby posing a significant risk to the health and safety of others.””

The following news article from the HSE shows the consequences of poor safety with working at height…

The standardised Safety Critical Medical consists of the following assessments:

  • A baseline health questionnaire to establish any current or previous medical/psychological health history
  • General Health (Weight, Height, BMI, BP, Pulse, Urinalysis for Blood & Proteins, Finger Prick test for Glucose & Cholesterol)
  • Audiometry (Hearing test)
  • Respiratory (Lung function)
  • Visual Acuity, colour vision and peripheral vision screen
  • Dermatology (Skin check)
  • Musculoskeletal / Mobility assessment
  • Drug & Alcohol test (optional)
  • Working at Height (optional)
  • Confined Space (optional)

However, the medical assessments are tailored dependant on your job role & working duties.
